What Exactly is a Tort, Anyway?

The word "tort" comes from French word for "wrong," a civil wrong or wrongful act, whether intentional or accidental, from which injury occurs to another. Therefore tort law is one of the major areas of law (along with family, contract, real property and criminal law) and results in more civil litigation than any other category.

When we think about tort law, the most common type of tort is negligence, but civil law firms (such as Marlowe Law) typically handle most, if not all, types of tort claims, including intentional torts (e.g., fraud, intentional interference, slander and libel, etc.).

Tort claims are, almost always, common law claims and have existed for hundreds of years in one form or another. Some are obscure and only apply in very limited and special circumstances. You always should retain an experienced civil trial attorney if you have a potential tort claim.
